So, what do you do for work?
It's a hard question to answer. My instinct is to say “full-stack software engineer”, and I am; I've worked with over 40 programming languages over my career, but that doesn't really cover it.
Most full-stack developers can do frontend and backend, but not much beyond that. I've done just about every job in IT, from running cables and setting up machines to building e-commerce platforms, custom software, dashboards, AI tools, and integrations, and even some audio and lighting systems along the way. I'm the jack of all trades.
A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.
And yes, I actually do blacksmithing as a hobby. The name isn't just a metaphor.
I started Digital Blacksmiths nearly 25 years ago and worked as a small business owner myself for over a decade doing everything from IT support to custom development. When one of my clients got stuck, I stepped in for what turned into a decade, helping them transition from a “wild west” small business into a small enterprise. That's really where I'm most comfortable and most productive.
After doing that kind of deep, long-term work with three businesses over 25 years, and helping a lot more in shorter engagements along the way, I realized: this is the work I want to do.
